Dunedin Celebrates J-Day

Dunedin Celebrates J-Day
May 8, 2006

The Octagon was a hive of activity over the weekend, with a graduation ceremony, a University Hall of Residence street Parade, and the annual J-Day celebrations.

Around 150 marijuana smokers turned out in support of International J-Day, an event celebrated by over 300 cities around the world.

Organisers say they're focused on the medicinal, recreational and spiritual properties of cannabis and believe it should be decriminalised.

Their peaceful protest was interrupted when truck loads of students from the city's local Hostels arrived in the Octagon.

The students were celebrating those who were graduating, with themed floats including pirates, Highlanders, and Super Heroes.

Sprits were high as the parade finished in the Octagon, with a mass water fight.
