Postgrad Rep(ly)
Dear David, (and critic et. al),
Quite right my not remembering what Abe is getting his Masters in; I was surprised more out of my poor ageist judgment call, in other words, because of his looks, I was under the impression that Abe was a youthful third year student rather than already a wizened old masters student. Since I ran on a platform that focuses on representing the diversity of all postgraduates, I knew that my autojudging of Abe had was a no-no that I planned to rectify.
Luckily, I ran into Abe at work on Saturday at the Farmers Market and decided to have a ‘get to know you better’ chat to him only to discover that not only are we from the same state in the US, we are from the same city, and we gave each other a good ribbing on each other’s high school (rival) reputation. It also turns out that Abe’s mum has the same first name as mine and even spent some time working for the same hippie gardeners as I had back in the day.
We never did bother to catch up on what each other was actually studying now, but we did find a lot of common ground and we ended our chat with hugs and a sense of good camaraderie. Next time I see Abe I’ll ask him what he’s getting his Masters in, I promise.
Forgive me my sins,
