Synthetic drugs overtake coca/opiates, cannabis still #1

According to UNODC amphetamine type stimulants like meth and ecstasy are now more popular than cocaine and heroin.  None of these are good, but a shift in poularity towards meth is definitely bad.  Synthetic stimulants are still only second to cannabis in overall popularity.  The mainstream media of course will scare monger, but really just another argument to legalise cannabis as a safer alternative.

420 Wednesday, 25 June, 2008 - Hard-core law reform activists brave antarctic conditions

Technical difficulties with our camera prevented us from filming today's 420, but there was not a whole lot of exciting action. No cops, just about 30 stoners sitting around in the cold getting stoned. It's down to the hard-core law reform activists now that the weather is deteriorating and most people are at home with their parents for the Uni holidays, but it is still a very significant sized group and it is nice to be able to have one big circle instead of a bunch of different ones.

Number of people: ~30

Weed: apparently quite plentiful

Weather conditions: chilly as a motherf@*#er

Number of gang members and schoolchildren: 0

The death this week of a musician who was three times denied a liver transplant highlights a new ethical concern: When dying patients need a transplant, should it be held against them if they've used marijuana with a doctor's blessing?

Timothy Garon, 56, died Thursday at Bailey-Boushay House. He was the lead singer for Nearly Dan, a Steely Dan cover-band.

His lawyer, Douglas Hiatt, said that although no one told him why Garon was turned down for a transplant, he suspects it was because he used marijuana with medical approval, as allowed under state law, to ease the symptoms of advanced hepatitis C.

CannaBus Arrives in Dunsterdam!!!

The CannaBus arrived in Dusterdam yesterday amid much fanfare. We all met at the oval at about 2pm and drove around the suburbs getting on the loudspeaker and encouraging people to come and join us for the 4:20 on the Union Lawn.

We drove through, Mosgiel, South Dunedin, St. Kilda, Andersons Bay, Princes St., The Octagon, George St., Clyde St., Polytech, Dundas St., Castle St., Gardens Corner, and the North East Valley before heading to the Union Lawn.

Unfortunately, because the University administration rescinded our permission to have the bus enter campus at the last mninute we had to park the bus on Cumberland Street, outside the OUSA office.

This had the effect of making our protest visible to every car driving by on State Highway 1, and probably did more to associate the University with our activities than if they had just let us drive the bus into the Union Lawn.

About 85 people attended the CannBus wecome ceremony.

video footage coming soon...
