Every year on the first Saturday in May, people in over 300 cities all around the world stand up for their rights and demand cannabis liberation as part of the Global Marijuana March (aka the Million Marijuana March, J-Day). Dunedin has participated in this event since it's inception as a global phenomenon in 1999. May 2nd 2009 is the 10th Annual Dunedin J-Day.
In 2003 and 2004 Dunedin cannabis law reform activists hot-boxed the Central Dunedin Police Station, each time resulting in no arrests and statements from the police that "they have better things to do". This tolerant attitude displayed by the Dunedin Police was the catalyst for initiating the bi-weekly 4:20 protests, and now you can participate in a little version of J Day every Wednesday and Friday at 4:20pm on the Otago University Union Lawn.
